Where the hell have I been?!

Today I took a good long look at my art style and realized that somewhere along the way I’d lost something. My drawings have gotten stiffer and less lively while my experessions get better. That changes today. I specifically drew some very difficult possitions and instead of using a rigid comic style I took the animator’s approach and I liked what I saw. I also remembered doing that more often. It was called Kota’s World. What I saw was an evolution of that old style. It’s more matured and sure of what it’s doing and how to get there and it would be a shame not to use it. Ladies and Gents, I’m back.
Marble Madness
July 1st, 2009 by Pembroke | Comments Off | Filed in BlogHey, everyone, it’s my first (of possibly many) comic referencing Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, the highest grossing badly reviewed money in existence. WOO! Personally I enjoyed the movie for the most part, there were some things that bothered me (much like the first movie), but I found it overall enjoyable. If your not afraid of spoilers and would like a somewhat more detailed explanation of my feelings on the movie, I guess you can read this.
While this strip references a specific scene from the movie, I don’t think it’s very spoiler-ish, and it makes fun of Bakugan more than TF: ROTF. For those that don’t know Bakugan is some weird Japanese imported cartoon show and toy line that kinda’ plays like a weird Yugioh version of marbles from my understanding. To be honest, I don’t really get it, but my step daughter is totally into it. Is this what’s it like when you start getting old? GET OFF MY LAWN!
Anyway, Bakugan are these little ball shaped things that transform into other things…yeah… supposedly they’re supposed to turn into robots, dragons, or monster… but really, they just look like the marble sprouts random things out of it… like I said I don’t get it, but seemly it’s all the rage with kids these days. Sigh… at least Transformers are still around so I can still relate with young’ens on that… right? RIGHT? Sigh…
Next post I can talk to you guys about the TF: ROTF toyline if you are interested in that since I’ve gotten quite a few figures since the movie came out and I wouldn’t mind taking some time to let you know what I think of them.
Also let’s give another round of applause for Chris Jones. His coloring just continues to blow me away. Also give an applause to my friend, Cary Woodham, he’s been my proofreader since the comic started. When I get some extra time a side, I plan to add both Chris and Cary to the Artists section of this webpage. Unfortunately my life has been a tad crazy lately, but I think we should be getting some calming down soon.

On Villains #2- Anton Chigurh
June 27th, 2009 by hpkomic | No Comments | Filed in BlogI am sorry, there is no way you an look at this guy and not be completely and utterly intimidated. Today, I want to talk about Anton Chigurh, and why he is one of my favorite villains. I am a huge fan of the Coen Brothers, and naturally No Country for Old Men, which was an adaptation of a book by Cormac McCarthy I have yet to read, but I am definitely planning on getting to it.
Anton Chigurh, played wonderfully by Javier Bardem, is ultimately the driving force of the film, at least in my opinion. Anton’s code, to see his job done, no matter who gets in the way, moves the action across the state of Texas and across the Mexican border creating one of the most entertaining cat-and-mouse chases I have ever seen in film.
One thing that Anton has going for him is his sheer presence. Throughout the movie he is direct, ruthless, and intimidating. This is the kind of stuff that makes for a great villain. It also doesn’t hurt that the guy has a really cool way of killing people either.
Throughout the film he uses a few different ways to dispatch folks, but arguably the coolest method is his use of a gas-powered bolt gun. At first glance it just appears to be a tank with a hose and some instrument at the end, but if he manages to bring it to your head, you’re pretty much screwed. He also uses a rather cool silenced rifle as well, and it definitely looks much more intimidating than the bolt gun, but ultimately, the bolt gun wins him some originality points.
One of the more interesting things to note is that he kind of fits the movie-monster trope. He’s a mostly unstoppable force. What makes him particularly effective compared to typical villains is that this guy takes a real beating. He survives car-accidents and gunshots and manages to press on. When you see him tend to his wounds, you have to ask yourself “what the hell is keeping that guy going?”. Sheer badassery, that’s what.
Hell, ever since I saw the movie, I’ve been intimidated by coin tosses. Don’t ask, just watch the movie and see why.

029- It’s a Toss-Up!

New page, format and such may be a little off, but these things happen. To speak candidly, I may need to not use such huge file-sizes for my in process pages, as the save times as I work are getting extremely long.
I only hope that these lighter-load source files don’t translate to lower-quality comics, that would really bug me. But at this point, these pages are starting to frustrate me by how taxing they are on my system.
Sigh.
