Happy 10th to The Powerpuff Girls
January 19th, 2009 by hpkomic | 2 Comments | Filed in Artdump
I caught the special episode of the Powerpuff Girls tonight, it was so much fun to see the characters interacting again. It’s a shame we’ll probably not get anymore episodes though. I am definitely interested in the complete series collection on DVD.
Anyway, I drew Mojo! I also snagged a great gif from a certain image-board. Fun times!

An ode to my scratch-file
January 18th, 2009 by hpkomic | 2 Comments | Filed in BlogI love having a scratch file to work with. While I have the recurring character colors saved as swatches (which is quite handy), it would be counter-productive to swatch every single color I use at various times per story and page. So, I pretty much make a separate PSD made of clippings of things I can sample color from.
The scratch file clippings are generally made from flat colored images that include the colored lineart. I don’t bother including shaded or overlayed clippings because I generally have the overlay settings written down, and my shading colors remain virtually the same across each page (#0d004c, the same color as character lineart, only at 25% opacity). You want the most basic colors to sample from, not something with a certain tint or overlay.
Scratch files are definitely not a unique concept, I am sure many other webcomic creators take advantage of them. If you do, let us know, and maybe even show us a picture of what clips you have on it.

Dear Zuda, your system sucks.

No, I’m not talking about what people generally would talk about when it comes to Zuda, how they select comics to run on the site, the current rotation of comics seeking attention, or any of those types of things. No. I am going to rant about the technical aspects of the site and why their comic-browser is killing my interest in their site.
I don’t think there is nearly enough criticism of Zuda’s method for displaying comics. The flash player is absolutely terrible and kind of implies that the people behind it have no idea how important usability and simple navigation is to a webcomic site. Why is the webcomic site model virtually unchanged across so many webcomics? It’s because it’s a good model, functional, and the best we have. Zuda’s method is totally against what webcomics should be.
