Thus begins the rise of The Duck and other events

thus-begins-the-rise-of-the-duck-and-other-events

Just got this in from the awesome Skoolmunkee over at Drunk Duck.

My cooker is broken! :[

How are you? Good? That’s good. Good!

OK guys, I’ll tell you something: I’ve been naughty. I’ve had lots of PQs for newsposts for a while now and been too lazy to make the newspost.

I know, I’m a disappointment to us all. :[

So, let’s get to it, shall we? I promise to get to the point! The nominations for the Web Comics Choice Awards are out, and there’s a couple of Drunk Duckers on there! Namely The Dreamer by comic_chic, and Templar Arizona by Spike! If you’re a webcomic creator, you can register on their site to vote- so why not support your co-ducks, eh?

RDraconis is having a contest for More to Life which would be perfect for folks who like clothes and character designs - more details here!

Cake for those who turn 25, namely Organization Infinite by flapjack1995; Legend of Zelda Hyrule is Screwed by zaneeba_slave; Chuck Norris Against the World by Eduds; BLNT: Synchronicity (a prequel to the original BLNT) by blntmaker, featuring recaps and profiles!

Turning 100 are Pokemon Town by Poke Alster (and will be having dramatic changes); Cancerous AIDS by BreakElemental; Philly by Ryan McLelland, featuring a crossover with Rich Bernatovech’s Sentinels!

At 75 is MAG-ISA by kyupol; and Shades by DAJB, featuring major masked-figure plot reveals!

Ultimate X by Frogman is 150 pages old!

Turning 175 is Grin-n-Spirit by ghostrunner!

At an amazing 200 pages is Fred
Peterson The Mighty Warlord - Book 1
by LanceDanger; and The Lost Chapters of Megaman by Cryosis!

And finishing up (no more updates!) is the once-featured Commedia dell’Arte by Litindir, who has new projects on the way according to the creator comments…

Thanks Skoolmunkee! I should mention she is the duly elected DD reperesentive to The Scienteers, so we’ll be sharing their news and milestones here, so expect frequent DD updates!

Next, we have a couple of things from the inbox!

We’ve had a couple of people eager to submit their comics, so once again I’d like to direct you guys to the guidelines. In case your submissions don’t meet them. We’d like to direct you to his comics Crazy Duck and Billy Johnson and his Duck are Explorers! The comics that Crazyduck (I wonder if he likes ducks??) sent in didn’t quite match the guidelines, but we’ll plug him anyway! That’s just the sort of folks we are around here!

While we’re at it, we better promote Brynn’s deviantART page. His submission didn’t quite meet the guidelines, but his art deserves a look and I hope to see some comics of his show up!

A duck-load of news.

a-duck-load-of-news

Oh wow, heck of a DD news update today. So much news we’re going to have to insert a cut!

So, first bit from our talented friend Skoolmunkee:

So today I place in the forums for you all to read, an interview with
LowResAtari. He and I have a bit of a talk about sprite comics!

Quote:

What types of things help a sprite comic stand out from the pack?
This is going to sound kind of weird talking about this particular subject, but original ideas are the best things you can have for getting noticed. Random comics, “Let’s all fight for absolutely no reason” comics, and massive cameo comics are among the things you’d want to avoid if you don’t want someone to roll their eyes and move onto something else.

You can read the rest in this forum thread!

The rest below the cut!

Just dropping by with some news that my comic, Dawnbringer, will be turning 25 pages this weekend, and to celebrate I’m posting a shiny new cover page that I worked ever so hard on.

You don’t want all his hard work to go to waste, do you? DO YOU?

Also at 25 pages is leaderofstars’s random ass friday comics! It turned 25 on the 27th though and that was a Wednesday? But isn’t it called ‘Friday’ comics…? :3

Avatar of Fire by mattwandcow (what’s a ‘wandcow’?) has reached 100 pages! Awesome!

Don’t forget about the On Demand threads!
Quote:

New stuff going on in the Networking and Community forum! There are now several ‘On Demand‘ threads where people can advertise their skills and services, and basically get on a list of people with various skills who are willing to offer their assistance on a voluntary and/or paid basis! For example, someone who is looking to write sci-fi stories can put themselves on the Writers on Demand list, and then if an artist comes along and wants someone to write a sci-fi story for them… tada! These aren’t Help Wanted threads though- these are the threads where the Help Wanted people should check first. :) So, there’s Writers On Demand, Artists on Demand, and
Audio On Demand! Check them out and advertise yourself for free! These aren’t just for comics either- it can be for any creative project! Eventually the scope of these threads may extend on to other artistic and creative sites, so come get yer pancakes while they’re hot! (Did that metaphor make any sense?)

Thanks for sharing Skoolmunkee!

New Creator Interview is up! mina_lunga of Gnoph!

Where we talk about monstrous parasites and also fantasy worlds. Please not that monstrous parasites are NOT necessarily fantasy, some pretty disgusting parasites are out there. Like that one that becomes a fish tongue, ew.
Quote:

Too much exposition is the bane of comic writers - how do you get across fantasy concepts without using it much? I cheat, and use tricks such as when I have gnoph genetics explained by a geneticist on a blackboard to the other characters (chapter 13). I usually find exposition unnecessary, though, since I rely upon my readers being psychically skilled at reading my mind and understanding what madness is unfolding on the pages.

Prolific Cartoonist KC Green Brings His Comics To KeenspotCresbard, SD, March 21, 2008 - Keenspot is proud to announce that prolific, award-winning cartoonist KC Green has joined Keenspot. He brings his signature comics HORRIBLEVILLE, BEE POWER (formerly DROOP), and others to the popular webcomics network.”I’ve been a fan of KC Green for awhile, and I’m honored that he’s chosen to join Keenspot,” said Keenspot CEO Chris Crosby. “His unique brand of humor and strikingly original art style make him one of the brightest lights shining on the webcomics scene today.”

“Keenspot has been kind of a dream for me since I discovered webcomics as a tiny child on the internet,” said Green. “I started reading webcomics ’cause of some of the talent these guys had back in the day. Now, I’m happy to be a part of that talent. Maybe some kid will discover and start reading webcomics because of me, and then grow to make some of his own. That’s all I can hope for.”

Hopefully KC will post and fill us in a bit on this. The DD news below the cut.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend, whether they celebrated a holiday or not!

Brainfuzz is technically last Friday’s featured comic, but since it didn’t show up on the main page til today, I’ll just leave it up and continue as normal on Wednesday. :) Here’s its blurb! “This suspiciously adorable comic consists of the brain bubbles of an artist- all those little, random thoughts and ideas that a person can’t get out of their head. It’s cute, it’s simple, it will give you a little smile on update days. You might even learn something- like even the gloomiest angst-ridden person is still a slave to a mew-ing kitty”

In no particular order:

Avatar of Fire reaches page 125 today! Coincidentally they are also launching a brand new story with “colors and stuff” and “actual plot.” Join them as they fight for time and space!

soonmme’s A Pokemon comic that everyone will ignore even though the author puts way more
work into it than some other very popular Pokemon comics that get over nine thousand views on days they DON’T update what the hell
(someone sounds bitter) has reached 50 pages!

Sonic Meets Megaman by omegasonic0 has reached 50 pages and is also starting its second chapter!

junoblairb has told me that Star Cross’d Destiny will reach 175 pages this week, and is also concluding the epic LaBauve/Mafia car chase! There will be explosions! Boom kapow bloosh rash tinkle! (That last one was bits of glass)

One of my favorite water-related words (oh and it’s a comic too), Sluice, has reached 25  ages! Also, Milky wanted me to keep this a secret, but it’s super SUPER amazing. Take that, you!

Mildly Mundane by confusedsoul will be 2 years old on Wednesday!

MysteriousJeff’s Pokemon Yellow Comics, a drawn Pokemon comic chronicling the adventures off Pokemon Yellow, has just reached its 50th page! (I just want to say that ‘Jeff’ isn’t a very mysterious name, you know?)

usagi_senshi wrote:

This is a shout out to all the fans of Rival Love. The comic just hit 50, March 21, 2008 at the time 7:30PM EST! I am planning on putting more pages up for a very long time…and I don’t intend to make my fans disappointed. Mpgraphics has worked so hard on this comic and I’m sure he’s as happy as I am writing it. SO thanks for all the support and awesome ratings. Keep reading!!

Thanks Skoolmunkee!

DD Neeeeeeeews

dd-neeeeeeeews

What up everyone? Recently I ran an experimental community project - an interview circle, where DD members could interview each other! There are 11 of them and for the next 2 weeks, I will be posting one every weekday!

It’s important that these guys get some props because interviewing is hard work, believe me! I was entertained by all of these so the more kudos and interest they get, the more successful the project was, and the more likely I’ll be to do something like it in the future and people can get all pimpin’ themselves :)
Today’s interview was conducted by usedbooks of Used Books, and features crifmer of Posted!
Quote:

Why did you decide to use Post-It notes for your comic? You know, I don’t actually know what started it. I always liked to doodle
on post-its, and I’ve always thought the post-it was a wonderful invention.
I use them an awful lot. I think it was because I had no idea, technically,
how to put a comic together. What size paper should I use? How big should
the panels be? I knew I wanted to do a three-panel strip because I’d be
experimenting and using it to develop artistically. With a random strip, I
could just draw whatever I wanted to work on and go in any direction I
wanted. And as I was doodling on a post-it, it hit me that they were just
the right size for the panels. So I decided to draw the strip on post-its,
using commonly found business materials to turn my lack of ability into a
gimmick.

Read the rest of the interview in the Interviews forum!

Hefs Adventures by Hefaistus has reached 25 comics! Congrats, and keep at it!

Mizukane says that Story of a Robot has reached 100 pages! Check it out!

Also reaching 100 pages is MAG-ISA by kyupol!

GUYS!!! Aussie_Kid would like everyone to know that the second issue of Fowl Play is available! Fowl Play is an e-zine collection of work by various contributors around Drunk Duck… Inside it are cool comics and some good stories, so head on over to LuLu and grab a copy! They’re a steal!

alejkhan’s Lola is going to be 300 pages old this week! Woo!

She’s also holding a contest called “The Spirit of Laziness Contest,” wherein “whomever’s fanart embodies best the true Spirit of Laziness will get themselves drawn in the Lola style and cameoed in the comic.” You can read more details if you like!

The second SuperFogeys book just went up on Wowio! Check it out:The SuperFogeys Collected Works #2 - “The Techno Shuffle” on Wowio

The Wowio version of the book features an exclusive-to-Wowio short backup story entitled “The Secret Origin of the Space Pig” drawn by Daniel Woodhouse of Thog Infinitron fame. Worth it just for the art (but I confess to being slightly proud of the story as well)!

The SuperFogeys Collected Works #1 - “Insane Romance From Hell” and “Bingo Night” also available.

AND IT’S ALL FREE.

Thanks a bunch Skoolmunkee!

A day late and a duck duck report short.

Wow, I’ve been neglecting my duties! Well, not really, computer problems and all that. Anyway, some drunk duck news from Skoolmunkee! Brace for impact!

Today’s featured comic is Opey the Warhead!

It’s Opey’s first day at school and he’s a little nervous. Not because hi sdad seems to be a real weirdo who gives bad advice, or because the city he lives in (which he’s never seen before) is some sort of manic psudo-future populated with robots and clones… but because he’s afraid the other kids won’t like him. You actually feel bad for the poor guy as he realizes people are afraid of him because he looks like a bomb. Fun, absurd, sad, and smart- oh and it looks nice too.

OK guys, the last of the community interviews has been posted! Sorry it’s up a bit late today, my internet wasn’t working until a few minutes ago. :)
Today’s interview is of Rutger (Arthur King, Life as Told by Rutger, and Sketching Reality), and conducted by Vakanai (Rumbles, Rumbles Late Night)!
Quote:

Which comic style, sprite or non-sprite, do you prefer?

I prefer non-sprite, mainly because you can do whatever you want with the characters. Spriting is fast and easy to do, but the characters are always in the same position. It gives for a nice challenge, because you have to make them look like they’re doing whatever it is in the comic, but if you need a completely different position, you’d either have to create a sprite from scratch or heavily alter the ones you’ve got. With ‘normal’ art, you can just draw your character any way you want.

Milestones!

harleydane999 tells me that Necrolupus has just gone past the 50-page milestone! Yay!

Zorphbert and Fred by Dawn is hitting #150! Don’t forget to swing by, word is there’s something special!

Special thanks, as always, to Skoolmunkee.
